West Virginia’s Road Swing Continues at Iowa State

AMES, Iowa – The No. 10-ranked West Virginia University women's soccer team continues its three-game road swing at Iowa State on Sunday, Sept. 27. Kickoff at Cyclone Sports Complex in Ames, Iowa, is set for 1 p.m. ET/12 p.m. CT.
The match will be streamed live on ESPN+, with Tom Kroeschell and Shea Sullivan on the call, while live stats are available at WVUsports.com.
Sunday's match marks the 14th all-time meeting between West Virginia and Iowa State. The Mountaineers are undefeated in the series, going 13-0 over the Cyclones since their first match in 2012 when West Virginia joined the Big 12 Conference. WVU and ISU met last year on Oct. 23 at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium, with WVU coming out on top with a 1-0 win after a goal from Anna Hauer. Of note, the Mountaineers and Cyclones have not met in Ames since 2022.
Additionally, Sunday's matchup marks the seventh meeting between head coaches Nikki Izzo-Brown and Matt Fannon and will be the last, as Fannon announced his retirement after the 2026 season. The two coaches first met in 2019 when Fannon was the coach at Bowling Green, with the Mountaineers earning a 2-0 victory at DDSS.
West Virginia has outscored its opponents 11-6 so far this season, while the WVU defense has held six of eight opponents to three shots on goal or fewer in each match. Of note, the Mountaineers suffered their first loss of the season on Sept. 24, snapping a 22-match regular-season unbeaten streak, which dated back to Aug. 28, 2025.
Last time out, West Virginia suffered a 2-0 loss to No. 13 Colorado in Boulder on Sept. 24. The Buffaloes took control of the match with a goal in the 36th minute, before adding insurance on a penalty kick goal in the 69th minute. Colorado led 13-9 in shots and 9-4 in shots on goal, while the Mountaineers took a narrow 4-3 edge in corner kicks. Redshirt senior goalkeeper Bailey Herfurth tallied a season-high seven saves in the loss.
Matt Fannon is in his seventh season as the head coach of the Cyclones. After coming off a 4-9-4 season in 2025, Iowa State enters Sunday's contest with a 4-4-2 record, coming off a 2-1 loss at Houston on Sept. 24. Sophomore forward Sophie Forrester has collected two goals on 19 shots so far this season. In goal, redshirt freshman Eme McClenahan records 34 saves on the year.
