Seniors Lead West Virginia to Win Over Utah on Senior Day
October 11, 2026 04:37 PM | Women's Soccer
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Using eight points scored by five different seniors, the No. 16-ranked West Virginia University women's soccer team earned a 2-1 win over Utah at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium in Morgantown on Sunday afternoon.
Â
Maya Leoni and Abbey Olexa scored the goals, while Olivia Shertzer, Jacey Rase, Anna Hauer and Leoni added assists to help WVU (9-1-2, 4-1-1 Big 12) capture its fourth straight win. Leoni's tally marked her first of the year and was credited as the game winner, while Olexa notched her fourth goal of the season.
Â
Olexa got the Mountaineers on the board early at the 8:53 mark, scoring her second goal of the year within the first 10 minutes of play. The Pine Beach, New Jersey, native scored the goal after a pair of one-touch passes from Leoni and Shertzer.
Â
The 1-0 score line stood at the break, but WVU added on to it soon after halftime with Leoni's first goal of the year. Expert passes once again led to the score for the Mountaineers, as Rase and Hauer were credited with the assists. Leoni's goal would eventually become the game winner after Utah was unfortunately able to avoid the shutout with a goal in the 64th minute. However, it wasn't enough as West Virginia secured the 2-1 win on senior day.
Â
In the final stats, WVU led 10-8 in shots and 4-0 in corner kicks, while the two teams tied with five shots on goal apiece. Redshirt senior Bailey Herfurth notched four saves in the win. With the victory, West Virginia takes a 1-0-1 lead in the all-time series with Utah, as the Utes made their first-ever trip to Morgantown on Sunday.
Â
Up next, the Mountaineers cap a three-game homestand when they welcome UCF to Morgantown on Friday, Oct. 16. The match is part of a double header with the WVU men's soccer team, and kickoff at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium is scheduled for 3 p.m. ET.
