Mountaineers Handle Business at Iowa State

AMES, Iowa – The No. 10-ranked West Virginia University women's soccer team (6-1-2, 1-1-1 Big 12) earned a 2-0 win over Iowa State inside the Cyclone Sports Complex in Ames, Iowa, on Sunday afternoon.
The Mountaineers took control of the match in the opening minutes with a goal in the seventh minute, before scoring an insurance goal in the second half to secure the win. With the win, WVU remains perfect all-time against the Cyclones, improving to 14-0 in the all-time series.
Junior forward/defender Sophia Nickel earned her first start of the season and put it to work quickly, as she got the Mountaineers on the board in just the seventh minute of the match. Senior midfielder Anna Hauer sent an excellent cross through the box and found Nickel waiting near the far post for the easy goal.
Out of the half, senior forward Abbey Olexa doubled the Mountaineer lead with a rocket in the 56th minute. After fighting the ball away from a pair of Iowa State defenders, Olexa squared up and sent it above the keeper's head and into the upper left corner of the goal.
In the final box score, West Virginia led in shots, 15-7, shots on goal, 8-3, and corner kicks, 6-3. The Mountaineer defense and redshirt senior goalkeeper Bailey Herfurth collected their fourth shutout of the season, as the defense also notched its seventh game this season holding the opposition to three shots on goal or fewer.
Up next, the Mountaineers cap their three-game road swing when they travel to Houston on Friday, Oct. 2. Kickoff at Carl Lewis International Complex in Houston, Texas, is set for 8 p.m. ET.
