MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The No. 16-ranked West Virginia University women's soccer team fell to No. 14 Texas Tech, 2-1, at John Walker Soccer Complex in Lubbock, Texas, on Thursday night.
Â
Despite West Virginia (9-3-2, 4-3-1 Big 12) scoring first, Texas Tech scored a pair of unanswered goals to claim the ranked win at home. WVU moves to 2-2-1 against ranked teams this season, while the squad is 0-2 against ranked foes on the road.
Â
The Mountaineers got on the board first in the seventh minute with an impressive strike from senior midfielder Maya Leoni. After West Virginia earned a free kick just outside the top of the box, Leoni took the shot and sent it straight into the back of the net for the early lead. The goal marked her second of the season.
Â
However, Texas Tech tied it up with a penalty kick just under 20 minutes later after senior defender Nyema Ingleton was shown a yellow card in the box. Tech's Kylie Bahr scored the ensuing penalty kick to level the scoreline and send the two teams into the locker room tied at 1-1 at halftime.
Â
Out of the break, the Red Raiders took the lead in the 56th minute and held on to it until the final whistle, claiming the 2-1 win. Texas Tech dominated the final box score, leading 20-9 in shots and 8-2 in shots on goal. WVU finished with a narrow 6-5 edge in corner kicks.
Â
Up next, West Virginia completes its two-game road swing at Oklahoma State on Sunday, Oct. 25. Kickoff at Neal Patterson Stadium in Stillwater, Oklahoma, is scheduled for 2 p.m. ET.
