WVU Stays Undefeated, Tops Marshall Sunday Night

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The No. 7 West Virginia University women's soccer team secured a 1-0 win over in-state rival Marshall to remain undefeated on the season inside Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium in Morgantown on Sunday night.
With the win, the Mountaineers also remain undefeated all-time against the Thundering Herd, moving to a perfect 6-0 in the Mountain State Derby. The 5-0 start also marks the squad's best start to a season since 2006 when it started the campaign 7-0.
After a scoreless first half, West Virginia got a quick breakthrough five minutes into the second half, as redshirt junior forward Jordyn Wilson scored her first goal in nearly two years after missing the 2025 campaign with an injury. Senior midfielder Maya Leoni and sophomore forward Tyler Clyburn were credited with assists on the score.
Despite scoring just one goal, the Mountaineers tallied a season-high 25 shots, placing a season-best 11 on goal. The West Virginia defense held Marshall to just three shots in the match, as well as one shot on goal. The shutout marked redshirt senior goalkeeper Bailey Herfurth's third of the season, while the WVU back line has held every opponent to three shots on goal or fewer this season.
Next up, West Virginia welcomes UCONN to Morgantown to cap nonconference play on Sunday, Sept. 13. Kickoff at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium is scheduled for 1 p.m. ET. It's Youth Soccer Day, and youth soccer participants are invited to stay after the game for a postgame youth clinic and autographs.
