LUBBOCK, Texas – The No. 17 West Virginia University baseball team clinched the road series victory against Texas Tech with a 10-2 win, Sunday afternoon at Dan Law Field at Rip Griffin Park. The Mountaineers improve to 24-8 overall and 10-5 in the Big 12 while the Red Raiders fall to 20-15 and 6-9 in league play.
Sophomore Chansen Cole went 8.0 innings on the mound, his longest outing as a Mountaineer and matching a career high. He allowed just two runs and struck out four while scattering seven hits against the nation's top offense.
At the plate, graduate student Sean Smith went 4-for-5 with two RBI and two runs scored. Six other players had two hits in the game as WVU matched a season high with 18 hits in the contest.
Senior Brock Wills drove in three runs while senior Matthew Graveline had two RBI. Graveline also recorded his 200th career hit in the game.
The Mountaineers jumped out the lead in the first as senior Paul Schoenfeld hit an RBI triple off the wall, just missing a home run. He then came into score on a single by Smith.
After a run-scoring groundout from Wills in the second, the game remained 3-0 thanks to some heads-up defense by the WVU infield as sophomore shortstop Matt Ineich cut off a runner at third in the second inning and junior third baseman Tyrus Hall got a runner out at the plate in the third inning.
Texas Tech got a run on the board in the sixth with a sacrifice fly but never got any closer as the Mountaineers put the game away with three runs in the eighth and four in the ninth, getting RBI singles from Wills, Smith, Graveline, and junior Armani Guzman as well as a sacrifice fly by freshman Zahir Barjam.
Cole came out for the ninth inning looking for the complete game but came out after the first two batters reached. The Red Raiders scored a run before graduate student Ian Korn came in to retire his only two batters, securing the victory.
West Virginia will be back on Wednesday, April 15 against Penn State from Meritus Park in Hagerstown, Maryland. First pitch is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
