HAGERSTOWN, Md. – In front of over 4,000 fans, the No. 15 West Virginia University baseball team defeated Penn State, 3-1, at Meritus Park in Hagerstown, Md. The Mountaineers improve to 25-8 while the Nittany Lions fall to 10-24.
Senior Paul Schoenfeld had two hits including a home run. Senior Brock Wills also had two hits while sophomore Gavin Kelly and graduate student Sean Smith each drove in a run.
On the mound, sophomore David Hagen started the game and went three innings, allowing one run and striking out one. The bullpen handled the rest as graduate student Ian Korn struck out three in two innings before freshman Weston Smith tossed a scoreless inning. Graduate student Reese Bassinger closed out the game with four strikeouts in three shutout innings to earn his second save of the year.
After a scoreless top of the first, Schoenfeld put the Mountaineers on top with his second home run of the season, a solo shot to right field.
Penn State hit a solo home run of their own in the second to tie the game, but WVU responded with two runs in the third. Wills hit a triple before coming home to score on a sacrifice fly by Kelly. After a double from Schoenfeld made it second and third, Smith hit an infield single to make it 3-1.
The score remained the same until the end as the bullpen closed it out. Bassinger faced the minimum across three innings thanks to two timely double plays in the eighth and ninth innings.
The Mountaineers will be back home at Kendrick Family Ballpar, April 17-19, against Houston. First pitch on Friday is set for 6:30 p.m.
