West Virginia's Season Comes to an End at College World Series

OMAHA, Neb. – The No. 16 West Virginia University baseball team saw its season come to a close on Wednesday with a 12-7 loss to No. 5 North Carolina. The Mountaineers end their best season in program history with a 47-17 overall record as one the final four teams remaining in the country.

"I couldn't be more proud of this group of kids," head coach Steve Sabins said. "What they were able to do and what they were able to accomplish is nothing short of miraculous. So thankful for these players, thankful for the seniors."

"We have kids in this group that have been part of the best season in program history twice," Sabins continued. "This is the best season in Mountaineer baseball history. They've been playing baseball for 135 years. So, this group of kids get to say that after 135 teams, that they were the first team to make it to Omaha, to play and be one of the last four teams standing. It's certainly tremendous."

Sophomore Gavin Kelly went 3-for-5 with a home run and two RBI while senior Matthew Graveline went 4-for-4 with a walk and drove in two runs. Junior Armani Guzman added two hits and two runs scored.

North Carolina jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first. In the home half, Graveline hit an RBI single to cut the deficit in half after one.

The Tar Heels expanded their lead with three runs in the third, three in the fourth, two in the sixth, and two in the seventh to take a 12-1 lead. West Virginia did not go down without a fight as it put up a five-spot in the seventh inning.

With two out and nobody on in the inning, seven straight Mountaineers reached base as runs came home on a triple by Kelly, singles by Schoenfeld, Graveline, and Ineich, and a passed ball.

In the eighth, Kelly hit his 19^th home run to match Jedd Gyorko and Mark Landers for the most in a single season by a Mountaineer.
