
Mountaineers Take Down Kennesaw State to Claim Series

KENNESAW, Ga. – The No. 24 West Virginia University baseball team cruised to a 9-1 victory over Kennesaw State, Saturday afternoon at Mickey Dunn Stadium. The Mountaineers improve to 8-1 while the Owls fall to 4-5.
Sophomore Chansen Cole earned the win with 5.0 scoreless innings. He struck out five and allowed just two hits. Graduate student Reese Bassinger followed with two perfect innings and a pair of strikeouts. Sophomore David Hagen closed out the game with a strikeout in a scoreless ninth. Mountaineer pitchers combined to allow just four hits and zero walks.
Junior Tyrus Hall had three hits, including his first home run of the season. Sophomore Gavin Kelly had three hits and two runs scored while junior Armani Guzman had three RBI. Senior Paul Schoenfeld added a hit and two RBI at the plate for WVU.
Guzman got the scoring started in the first with a sacrifice fly. The Mountaineers added two in the third on a single by senior Ben Lumsden, who then came around to score on a passed ball.
Hall rocketed a solo home run to lead off the fourth to make it 4-0, which it remained until the eighth when WVU tacked on three more runs. Senior Matthew Graveline drove in one with a single before Schoenfeld knocked in two more with another single.
The Owls got a run in the home half of the eighth on a solo home run.
Guzman closed out the scoring in the ninth as he beat out an infield single to first base, allowing two runs to score, including Kelly all the way from second.
The Mountaineers will play on Sunday for the first time this season as they look for the sweep. First pitch is set for noon.
