KENNESAW, Ga. – The No. 24 West Virginia University baseball team dropped the series finale to Kennesaw State, 7-6, Sunday afternoon at Mickey Dunn Stadium. The Mountaineers fall to 8-2 while the Owls improve to 5-5.
West Virginia jumped out to a 6-0 lead before Kennesaw State rallied with two runs in the sixth, three in the seventh, and two in the eighth.
Sophomore Gavin Kelly went 3-for-4 with two home runs and four RBI. Redshirt freshman Ryan Maggy made his first career start and drove in two runs on a bases-loaded single in the first inning.
In the second, Kelly hit an opposite-field three run home run, his first of the game and the season. He hit his second in the sixth inning, a solo shot to center field.
A pair of unearned runs got the Owls on the board in the sixth. Three more runs, including a two-run home run, got them within one in the seventh, before another two-run home run put them on top in the eighth.
In the ninth, senior Matthew Graveline hit a one-out double high off the left field wall, but the Mountaineers could not push the run across.
West Virginia will return home for two games against Radford on March 3-4. First pitch for both games from Kendrick Family Ballpark is set for 2 p.m.
