90th-Minute Goal Saves Draw with No. 12 Baylor

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – After redshirt senior forward Saige Wimes' 90th-minute goal, the No. 9-ranked West Virginia University women's soccer team tallied a 1-1 draw with No. 12 Baylor in its Big 12 Conference opener in Morgantown on Friday night.
The score marked Wimes' second of the season for the Mountaineers (5-0-2, 0-0-1 Big 12), both of which have come at a critical time in the match for West Virginia. With the draw, WVU and Baylor each earn one point to begin Big 12 Conference play.
Despite West Virginia outshooting Baylor, 20-4, the Bears were the first ones on the board in the 78th minute when Lauren Omholt beat the Mountaineer defense and took WVU's redshirt senior goalie Bailey Herfurth one-on-one to score the goal.
From there, West Virginia became desperate for the tie. In the final minute of play, the Mountaineers earned a corner kick with 35 seconds remaining. Senior midfielder Anna Hauer took the corner and sent a perfectly placed ball that found the foot of Wimes at the 89:42 mark to salvage the tie.
In the final box score, WVU tallied seven shots on goal, while Baylor's lone shot on frame was its goal. West Virginia added six corner kicks in the match, compared to three for the Bears. Wimes and senior midfielder Maya Leoni led the offense with four shots apiece.
Despite allowing the goal, the Mountaineer defense held Baylor to just one shot on goal, marking the sixth game this season they have held their opponent to three shots on goal or fewer.
Of note, Wimes made her first career start for West Virginia Friday night.
Up next, WVU heads on the road for the first time since August, opening a two-game road stretch against No. 15 Colorado on Thursday, Sept. 24. Kickoff at Prentup Field in Boulder, Colorado, is tabbed for 9 p.m. ET.
