LAWRENCE, Kan. – Kicking off one of the marquee series across the nation, the No. 15 West Virginia University baseball team defeated No. 7 Kansas, 4-1, on Friday behind a complete game by redshirt junior Maxx Yehl. The Mountaineers improve to 33-12 and 17-8 in the Big 12 while the Jayhawks fall to 37-13 and 20-5 in conference play.
Yehl recorded nine strikeouts on the night while allowing just the one run on six hits. It is the second complete game for a Mountaineer this season after sophomore Chansen Cole went the distance last week against Kansas State.
A day after learning of his invite to the USA Baseball National Collegiate Team training camp, sophomore Gavin Kelly went deep for the fifth time in the last four games. Junior Tyrus Hall hit his fourth home run of the season while junior Armani Guzman had three hits, an RBI, and a run scored.
After Yehl and Kansas starter Dominic Voegele traded zeroes in the first two innings, Kelly put WVU on top with a solo shot in the third, his team-leading 11th of the season, that hit off the light pole in right-center field.
The Mountaineers scored two more runs in the fourth as graduate student Sean Smith hit a triple to lead off the inning before coming in to score on an infield single by Guzman. After advancing to third on a single by graduate student Brodie Kresser, the two executed a first-and-third double steal to tack on a run.
Kansas got on the board with a sacrifice fly in the sixth, but Hall answered in the seventh with a leadoff home run.
Yehl allowed his final hit of the night in the seventh before pitching a 1-2-3 eighth. In the ninth, he struck out Brady Ballinger before issuing a one-out walk. A little dribbler in front of the plate produced the second out before Yehl struck out Augusto Mungarrieta on his 124th pitch of the night to end the ballgame.
It was the first win for WVU over a top-10 team since defeating No. 8 Texas Tech in Lubbock in 2022. The Mountaineers will look for its first top-10 series win since taking a series against No. 3 TCU, also in 2022, on Saturday with first pitch set for 3 p.m. ET.
