LAWRENCE, Kan. – The No. 15 West Virginia University baseball team defeated No. 7 Kansas, 5-2, Saturday afternoon at Hoglund Ballpark to clinch the series victory. The Mountaineers improve to 34-12 and 18-8 in the Big 12 while the Jayhawks fall to 37-14 and 20-6 in league play.
It is the highest-ranked road series win in program history for the Mountaineers and first top-10 series win since taking two of three against No. 10 TCU in 2022. Overall, it is just the third top-10 series win in program history. West Virginia has never swept a ranked series on the road.
Sophomore Gavin Kelly had two hits on the day, including his sixth home run in the last five games. In front of nearly 100 friends and family, Wichita native Paul Schoenfeld hit his third home run of the season. Senior Matthew Graveline also added three hits for the Mountaineers on the day.
On the mound, sophomore Chansen Cole got the start and allowed two runs while striking out six in 5.0 innings. Graduate student Ian Korn earned the win with 4.0 scoreless innings in relief while striking out three. The two pitchers did not yield a walk or hit-by-pitch in the game, the first time this season the Mountaineers have accomplished that.
After going 0-for-5 on Friday, Schoenfeld reversed his fortunes in the first inning with a solo home run to dead center field over the 20-plus foot wall.
Kansas hit a solo home run in the bottom of the first to tie up the game, but graduate student Brodie Kresser put the Mountaineers back on top with a sacrifice fly in the second, just missing a two-run home run.
WVU held the lead until the 5th when Josh Dykhoff hit an inside-the-park home run for the Jayhawks as his fly ball took a hard bounce off the center field wall and bounced back toward the infield, giving him enough time to circle the bases.
Korn came into pitch in the sixth and kept the game tied until the Mountaineers took the lead in the eighth. With runners on first and second and two outs, Kresser beat out an infield single and when the ball got away, graduate student Sean Smith bolted home to score the go-ahead run.
In the bottom of the eighth, senior Ben Lumsden picked up an outfield assist as he threw out Cade Baldridge trying to stretch a single into a double. Baldridge was initially ruled safe, but after review, the call was reversed, ending the inning.
In the ninth, Kelly provided the insurance with a two-run home run over the high wall in center, his team-leading 12th of the season. Korn closed out it out with a pair of strikeouts in a 1-2-3 bottom of the ninth.
