LAWRENCE, Kan. – The No. 15 West Virginia University baseball team finished off the sweep over No. 7 Kansas on Sunday at Hoglund Ballpark with a 13-2, eight-inning victory. The Mountaineers improve to 35-12 and 19-8 in the Big 12 while the Jayhawks fall to 37-15 and 20-7 in league play.
It is the first series sweep of a top-25 team on the road for the Mountaineers in program history and just the second ranked sweep overall, with the first coming in 2024 against No. 17 UCF.
Graduate student Sean Smith went 3-for-5 with a home run and four RBI on the day, falling just a double short of the cycle. Senior Paul Schoenfeld and junior Tyrus Hall both had two hits and three RBI while graduate student Brodie Kresser drove in two. Schoenfeld, Smith, senior Matthew Graveline, junior Armani Guzman, and sophomore Gavin Kelly all scored two runs for the Mountaineers.
On the mound, graduate student Reese Bassinger came into the game in the fourth inning and never gave up the ball, throwing 5.0 scoreless innings with four strikeouts while allowing just two hits.
The Mountaineers jumped out to the lead in the first on an RBI single by Kresser. Kansas hit a two-run home run in the second to take their only lead of the series, but it only lasted for a couple of outs as Smith hit a two-run home run in the top of the third, his eighth of the season.
West Virginia broke the game open in the sixth with six runs. With the bases loaded, Hall was hit by a pitch before sophomore Matt Ineich brought home a run with a groundout. After an intentional walk to Kelly, Schoenfeld cleared the bases with a three-run double. Smith capped the inning with an RBI single.
The Mountaineers added two runs in the seventh on a double by Hall and two more in the eight on a triple from Smith and sacrifice fly from Kresser.
Bassinger finished the job in the eighth, striking out his final batter to secure the run-rule victory and the sweep.
West Virginia will be back at home to close out the regular season, May 14-16, against TCU. First pitch on Thursday is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
