
Mountaineers Shut Out Kansas State

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Behind redshirt junior Maxx Yehl and graduate student Ian Korn, the No. 18 West Virginia University baseball team shut out Kansas State, 7-0, Friday evening at Kendrick Family Ballpark. The Mountaineers improve to 29-12 and 14-8 in the Big 12 while the Wildcats fall to 26-20 and 9-13 in conference play.
Yehl tossed 5.0 scoreless innings with eight strikeouts while Korn struck out two in 4.0 innings for WVU's fifth shutout of the season. Yehl improves to 6-1 and lowers his ERA to 2.20 while Korn collects his first save of the season.
Kansas State came into the game averaging 9.1 runs per game, 10th best in the country, and were eighth in the nation with a .547 slugging percentage.
At the plate, senior Paul Schoenfeld had three hits and an RBI. Graduate student Brodie Kresser had two hits and two RBI while senior Brock Wills had two hits and drove in a run as well.
Schoenfeld gave the Mountaineers the lead in the first with an RBI double. Sacrifice flies by graduate student Sean Smith in the third and senior Matthew Graveline extended the WVU lead to 3-0.
In the seventh, the Mountaineers put up four runs, starting with a two-run single by Kresser. A first-and-third double steal by Kresser and junior Armani Guzman added a run before Wills had an RBI single.
The two teams will meet for game two of the series on Saturday with first pitch scheduled for 4 p.m.
