MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The No. 18 West Virginia University baseball team defeated Kansas State, 9-1, Saturday afternoon at Kendrick Family Ballpark as sophomore Chansen Cole tossed a complete game. The Mountaineers improve to 30-12 and 15-8 in the Big 12 while the Wildcats fall to 26-21 and 9-14 in league play.
Cole was dominant on the mound, striking out nine while allowing just five hits and one walk. It was the first complete game for the Mountaineers this season and first since Griffin Kirn went the distance against Cincinnati in the 2025 Big 12 Tournament. Cole also picks up his eighth win of the season, most in the Big 12.
The Mountaineers pounded out 15 hits at the plate with five players having multiple hits, led by three by junior Armani Guzman, who also drove in two runs. Sophomore Gavin Kelly and graduate student Sean Smith each hit home runs with Smith collecting three RBI. Smith and Kelly also both scored three runs.
Kelly opened the scoring in the third with an opposite-field solo home run, his team-leading seventh of the season. An error by the Wildcats opened the door for two more runs in the inning as Guzman hit a two-run triple.
In the top of the fourth, senior Matthew Graveline picked up his sixth outfield assist of the season as the Kansas State runner was attempting to steal and could not get back in time as Graveline fired it back to first after making a catch in left field. It is the most outfield assists in a season by a Mountaineer since Caleb McNeely had six in 2023.
In the home half of the fourth, a sacrifice fly by Matt Ineich tacked on a run for WVU before Kelly scored on an error after a hit by senior Paul Schoenfeld.
In the fifth, graduate student Brodie Kresser had WVU's second run-scoring triple of the day. The Wildcats got their first run of the series with a solo home run in the sixth, but Smith answered in the home half with a three-run home run to push the lead back up to eight.
Cole handled the rest, including striking out a pair in a 1-2-3 ninth inning.
The Mountaineers will look for the sweep on Sunday with first pitch set for 1 p.m.
