MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The No. 15 West Virginia University baseball team dropped its series opener to Houston, 10-7, Friday evening at Kendrick Family Ballpark. The Mountaineers fall to 25-9 and 10-6 in the Big 12 while the Cougars improve to 17-19 and 4-12 in conference play.
Sophomore Matt Ineich went 3-for-4 on the night with two RBI. Junior Tyrus Hall hit his second home run of the season while graduate student Sean Smith drove in two runs.
On the mound, junior Dawson Montesa suffered the loss as he gave up five runs, four earned, in 4.1 innings while striking out six. Senior Carson Estridge worked 2.1 innings and allowed three runs, just one earned, while striking out two. Sophomore Bryant Yoak had three strikeouts in 1.2 innings while not allowing a hit.
The Cougars jumped out in front in the third inning with four runs. Ineich got one run back in the bottom of the inning with an RBI single.
After Houston added a run in the fifth, the Cougars put up three more in the seventh to extend their lead to 8-1.
In the home half of the seventh, the Mountaineers put up a four-spot to get back in the game. Hall started the inning with a solo home run before Ineich had his second RBI single of the game. WVU was then gifted a couple of runs as senior Paul Schoenfeld walked with the bases loaded before Smith reached on a catcher's interference to force in a run.
Houston tacked on a pair of insurance runs in the ninth with a two-run home run by Blake Fields. Smith got the two runs back in the bottom of the ninth with a single, but the rally halted there for the Mountaineers.
West Virginia will look to even the series on Saturday with first pitch set for 11 a.m.
