Montesa Shines in Series Opening Win at Kennesaw State

Montesa allowed just one run over the course of his outing. Sophomore Bryson Hoff struck out a batter and sophomore Mac Stiffler had three more as Mountaineer pitchers combined for 15 strikeouts on the day.
At the plate, senior Brock Wills hit his second home run in as many games. Senior Paul Schoenfeld, sophomore Gavin Kelly, and sophomore Matt Ineich each had three hits in the game as part of a 16-hit performance by WVU. Schoenfeld finished the day with three RBI while Ineich scored three runs.
Wills got the scoring started in the third inning with a leadoff home run to right. A two-run double off the third base bag by Kelly brought in a pair of runs before a single by junior Armani Guzman knocked in two more. Schoenfeld capped the inning with an RBI single.
The Mountaineers tacked on two more runs in the sixth on a sacrifice fly by senior Matthew Graveline and single from Schoenfeld.
Montesa struck out the side in the first and cruised from there, facing the minimum until the fourth inning. His only blemish came in the seventh inning on a solo home run.
West Virginia put the game away in the eighth with four runs. Senior Ben Lumsden and Schoenfeld both had RBI doubles in the inning. A wild pitch brought home a third before freshman Matthew Robaugh collected an RBI with his first career hit.
The Mountaineers will look to take the series on Saturday with first pitch set for 2 p.m.
