West Virginia Completes Sweep of Kansas State
May 03, 2026 07:05 PM | Baseball
For the first time this season, the Mountaineers hit three home runs in a game as junior Tyrus Hall, sophomore Gavin Kelly, and graduate student Sean Smith all went deep. In fact, all three came in the eighth inning, the first time WVU has had three home runs in an inning since hitting three in the first inning against Penn State in 2024. Overall, it is just the fourth time since 2019 the Mountaineers have gone deep three times in a frame.
Kelly, Smith, and sophomore Matt Ineich each finished the day with two RBI, three of seven different players to drive in at least one run. Senior Paul Schoenfeld collected three hits on the day, giving him eight hits in the series.
The Mountaineers scored an unearned run in the first on a failed pickoff to take an early lead. Kansas State answered with a run in the third to even the contest back up.
In the home half of the third, Schoenfeld hit an RBI double to put WVU back in front before the Mountaineers scored five in the fourth inning. Senior Brodie Kresser had an RBI single before Ineich drove in two with a double. Smith followed with an RBI infield single and when the throw got away, a second run came in to score.
The Wildcats hit a three-run home run in the eighth to get back within three, but WVU answered with six runs in the bottom half. It started when Guzman led a double steal with Kresser, coming home when the throw went into the outfield, before a squeeze bunt from senior Brock Wills scored Kresser. WVU then hit three home runs in the next five at-bats, a solo shot from Hall, a two-run homer by Kelly, and a solo home run by Smith.
Kansas State scored a pair of runs in the ninth, but that was all as WVU held on for its second conference sweep of the season.
The Mountaineers will return to action on Tuesday evening against Marshall from GoMart Ballpark in Charleston for their final non-conference game of the season. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m.
