MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The No. 9 West Virginia University baseball team defeated TCU, 6-4, Saturday afternoon at Kendrick Family Ballpark to conclude the regular season. The Mountaineers improve to 37-13 and 21-9 in the Big 12 while the Horned Frogs fall to 33-20 and 17-13 in conference play.
West Virginia had to rally for the victory, scoring three runs in the eighth with the tying and go-ahead runs coming via wild pitches. Graduate student Reese Bassinger earned the win with 3.2 scoreless innings in relief while allowing just two hits.
The first three hitters in the WVU lineup – sophomore Matt Ineich, sophomore Gavin Kelly, and graduate student Paul Schoenfeld – combined for seven hits with three coming off the bat of Ineich. Graduate student Brodie Kresser reached base four times with a hit and three walks while junior Tyrus Hall hit his fifth home run of the season.
TCU took the lead just three batters into the game before hitting a two-run home run in the third to go up 3-0. In the home half of the third, Kelly hit an RBI triple off the center field wall before coming home to score on a single by Schoenfeld, cutting the deficit to just one run.
In the fourth, Hall tied up the game with a leadoff home run to left, his fifth of the season. The Horned Frogs retook the lead in the sixth on an RBI single by Noah Franco.
Facing TCU's closer Tanner Sagouspe in the eighth, who entered the game with a sub-2.00 ERA, Kresser led off with a walk before senior Brock Wills hit a single. A sacrifice bunt from Hall put runners on second and third. With rain coming down in Morgantown, Sagouspe unleashed two wild pitches, allowing both Kresser and Wills to score, giving WVU the lead.
Bassinger issued a one-out walk in the ninth but got a flyout and groundout to end the ballgame, securing the series victory for the Mountaineers.
West Virginia is the No. 2 seed in the Big 12 Tournament and will play its first game on Thursday, May 21, from Surprise Stadium in Surprise, Ariz. First pitch is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. ET against an opponent still to be determined.
