
West Virginia Set for Big 12 Tournament

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The No. 9 West Virginia University baseball team heads to Surprise, Arizona for the 2026 Big 12 Tournament. The first game for the Mountaineers at Surprise Stadium will be on Thursday, May 21, at 7:30 p.m. at Surprise Stadium against the winner of the No. 7-seed TCU and No. 11-seed Kansas State.
Fans can watch Thursday's game on ESPNU. Friday's semifinals will be on ESPN+ while the final will be on ESPN2. Every WVU game will be available to listen to on the Mountaineer Sports Network, and fans can follow with live stats at WVUsports.com.
As the No. 2-seed in the tournament, WVU earned a double-bye into the quarterfinals. It is a single-elimination tournament with the semifinals on Friday at 11 p.m. ET and the final on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. ET should the Mountaineers advance. The tournament got started on May 19 with Kansas State defeating Utah and BYU defeating Texas Tech. Before the Wildcats and Horned Frogs meet on Wednesday, the Cougars will play Baylor in the other second round matchup.
The Mountaineers are 37-12 overall this season and finished second in the Big 12 with a 21-9 record. TCU is the No. 7 seed after going 33-20 and 17-13 in league play while Kansas State is the No. 11 seed with a 29-26 overall record and 11-19 mark in the Big 12.
On Tuesday, redshirt junior Maxx Yehl became the third Mountaineer to be named Big 12 Pitcher of the Year. He was joined on the All-Big 12 First Team by fellow pitchers Chansen Cole and Ian Korn as well as catcher Gavin Kelly. Outfielder Paul Schoenfeld earned a spot on the second time while Reese Bassinger, Carson Estridge, Armani Guzman, Matt Ineich, and Sean Smith earned honorable mention status.
Kelly leads WVU with a .387 batting average, 12 home runs, and 47 RBI. He is a Golden Spikes and Dick Howser Trophy semifinalist and was recently named the top college prospect in the 2027 MLB Draft by Baseball America.
West Virginia is looking for its first Big 12 Tournament championship and sixth overall tournament title.
The NCAA selection show will take place on Monday, May 25, at 12 p.m. ET.
