MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The No. 15 West Virginia University baseball team evened up its series with Houston on Saturday with a 7-1 victory at Kendrick Family Ballpark. The Mountaineers improve to 26-9 and 11-6 in the Big 12 while the Cougars fall to 17-20 and 4-13 in conference play.
After starting pitcher Maxx Yehl left the game in the third inning, graduate student Ian Korn stepped up with 5.0 innings of one-run ball, striking out four. Graduate student Reese Bassinger finished the game with two perfect innings.
At the plate, junior Armani Guzman had two hits, scored two runs, and stole two bases. Senior Paul Schoenfeld had three stolen bases and scored two runs while graduate student Brodie Kresser and senior Matthew Graveline each had two RBI.
The game was scoreless until the fifth when Guzman stole second, stole third, and came home to score on a squeeze bunt by Graveline. In the sixth, Guzman was the one bunting as he reached with two outs, allowing Schoenfeld to score.
Graveline tacked on another run in the sixth with a single before senior Brock Wills singled home the fourth run of the afternoon for the Mountaineers.
