Mountaineers Even Series Against No. 22 Arizona State

Redshirt junior Maxx Yehl had another strong outing, going 7.0 innings while allowing three runs. He struck out four and walked none to improve to 5-0 on the season.
Sophomore Gavin Kelly went 3-for-5 on the night with a home run and three RBI. Graduate student Sean Smith also had three hits and three RBI while junior Armani Guzman had three hits and three runs scored. Junior Tyrus Hall added two RBI for the Mountaineers.
For the second night in a row, WVU got off to a quick start with a run in the first as Smith hit an RBI single. Also, like last night, the Sun Devils answered with a run in the bottom of the inning as Landon Hairston hit a double, advanced on a wild pitch, and scored on a errant pickoff attempt.
The Mountaineers retook the lead in the second with six runs and never looked back. Hall initiated the scoring in the inning with a two-run triple before scoring on a wild pitch. A single by Smith and error by ASU brought in two more runs before senior Brock Wills beat out an infield single, allowing the sixth run of the inning to cross the plate.
In the third, Hall and Guzman executed a first-and-third double steal to push the WVU lead to 8-1. Hairston got the Sun Devils back to within 8-3 with a two-run home run in the fifth.
The Mountaineers added three insurance runs in the eighth as Kelly hit a two-run home run before Smith had his third RBI single of the night. WVU added two more runs in the ninth on a groundout from sophomore Matt Ineich and infield single by Kelly.
Arizona State hit a three-run home run in the bottom of the ninth, but redshirt freshman JD Costanzo closed out the game with two strikeouts and a groundout.
West Virginia will look to take the series on Sunday with first pitch set for 8 p.m. The game will air on ESPN2.
