Mountaineers Claim Series From No. 22 Arizona State

The Mountaineers pounded out 17 hits on the night, getting multi-hit performances from sophomore Matt Ineich, sophomore Gavin Kelly, senior Paul Schoenfeld, senior Brock Wills, and junior Tyrus Hall. Graduate student Sean Smith had just one hit, but it was a big one, a go-ahead grand slam in the sixth inning.
On the mound, sophomore Chansen Cole labored through the first inning, but limited the damage to just one run before putting up zeros the rest of his outing, finishing his night with four strikeouts in 5.1 innings. Freshman David Perez got his sixth save of the season with 3.2 innings in relief, striking out two.
Arizona State's Landon Hairston hit his fourth home run of the weekend to lead off the first inning before Cole hit three batters as the Sun Devils looked to jump out to a big lead. However, a double play helped limit ASU to just a single run.
The Mountaineers were held in check by Kole Klecker until the sixth when they loaded the bases with one out. On a 2-2 pitch, Smith hammered a grand slam to right-center field and put WVU on top.
WVU added a run in the seventh on a single by Ineich. In the eighth, senior Matthew Graveline doubled and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt before stealing home, WVU's sixth steal of home this season, most in the nation.
In the ninth, West Virginia tacked on three insurance runs on a double by Schoenfeld and two-run single from Wills.
The Mountaineer defense made some stellar plays throughout the game, particularly from Guzman at first base, Hall at third, and Kelly throwing out two baserunners from behind the plate.
The Mountaineers will head to Tucson for a midweek non-conference matchup with Arizona on Tuesday. First pitch from Hi Corbett Field is set for 9 p.m. ET.
