HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – Four pitchers for the West Virginia University baseball team combined to throw a one-hit shutout to defeat Marshall, 3-0, Tuesday evening at Jack Cook Field. The Mountaineers improve to 17-4 while the Thundering Herd fall to 13-10.
Sophomore David Hagen started the game and tossed three scoreless innings with three strikeouts before graduate student Ian Korn followed three strikeouts in three scoreless innings as well. Graduate student Reese Bassinger gave up the only hit to the Herd but kept the shutout intact with five strikeouts in two innings before freshman David Perez closed the game for his fifth save of the season.
The Mountaineers scored one run in each of the first three innings, getting an RBI groundout from senior Brock Wills in the first before run-scoring singles from sophomore Gavin Kelly and graduate student Brodie Kresser in the second and third innings, respectively.
Seniors Matthew Graveline and Paul Schoenfeld both had two hits in the game while Schoenfeld, sophomore Matt Ineich and freshman Zahir Barjam each scored a run.
Marshall brought the tying run to the plate in both the sixth and eighth innings, but strikeouts by Korn and Bassinger ended any threats.
It was the first one-hitter for the Mountaineers since allowing a single hit to UNC Greensboro in 2023.
West Virginia will be back in action on Friday to begin a three-game series at No. 22 Arizona State. First pitch is set for 9:30 p.m. ET.
