MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The No. 10 West Virginia University men's soccer team battled to a 2-2 draw against No. 9 High Point, Tuesday evening at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium. The Mountaineers now sit at 5-1-2 while the Panthers go to 5-0-3.
Senior Felix Ewald and junior Pablo Pozos each scored for the Mountaineers while senior Ethan Dekel Daks and freshman Juan Alvarez both collected assists. For Ewald, it was his second of the season while it was the Sun Belt-leading eighth goal of the year for Pozos.
Overall, the Mountaineers outshot the Panthers, 17-9, including a 9-4 advantage in shots on goal. WVU also had a 6-4 edge in corner kicks.
Ewald's goal came just 16 seconds into the contest as High Point hit the opening kick out of play. Graduate student Bryce Swinehart threw it in to Alvarez racing down the field and found a streaking Ewald down the middle, who corralled it and fired a shot past the keeper.
High Point responded quickly with a goal in the sixth minute before taking the lead in the 19th minute.
West Virginia had three shots on goal in the 28th and 29th minute, but a shot by sophomore Isaac Scheer and two from senior Marcus Caldeira were saved by the Panther keeper Josh Caron.
The Panthers remained on top until the 71st minute when the Mountaineers earned a corner kick. Dekel Daks sent the ball into the box where it bounced up to Pozos who placed a slight touch on it to flick it into the back of the net.
The Mountaineers had a golden opportunity in the 75th minute as Caldeira only had the keeper to beat, but Caron stayed big and made the save.
Graduate student Marc Bonnaire was called upon in the 79th minute to make his only save of the half and second of the night, to keep the game level. Neither team had a shot on target in the final 10 minutes as the two squads settled for the draw.
West Virginia will hit the road for a Sun Belt matchup at UCF on Sunday, Sept. 28. Kickoff from the UCF Soccer and Track Complex is set for 7 p.m.
