HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The 32^nd edition of the Mountain State Derby between the No. 21 West Virginia University men's soccer team and Marshall ended in a 1-1 draw, Sunday night at Hoops Family Field. The Mountaineers go to 5-1-2 on the season and 1-0-1 in Sun Belt play while the Thundering Herd are now 4-1-3 and 1-0-1 as well in conference play.

Junior Jacob Redenfors scored his first goal of the season with junior Civan de Jesus Ferreira collecting the assist. It is the 12^th goal this season for the Mountaineers, 11 of which have come in the second half.

West Virginia outshot Marshall, 11-7, and had a 5-3 edge in shots on goal. WVU also had the advantage in corner kicks, taking seven compared to three for the Herd, while fouls were even at 13.

In first half, the Mountaineers managed just three shots, only one that was on frame. Marshall only took two shots in the first half but made one count as Carl Romberg scored in the 25^th minute to put the Herd on top.

In the 62^nd minute, WVU earned a free kick and wasted no time taking out as de Jesus Ferreira found Redenfors to his right. He took a couple of dribbles into the box before firing a left-footed shot that snuck just inside the near post to even up the contest.

Mawer had to make his biggest save of the night in the 68^th minute, turning away a shot by David Cho.

The best chance for the Mountaineers to find the go-ahead goal came in the 86^th minute as junior defender Tristan Pusztahegyi led a rush forward and left the ball off for sophomore Sammie Walker, but his shot was deflected and went just wide.

West Virginia will be back on the pitch, Saturday, Oct. 3, to take on No. 1 South Carolina. Kickoff from Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium is scheduled for 7 p.m.
