MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Redshirt sophomore Toby Mawer of the West Virginia University men's soccer team has been named the Sun Belt Defensive Player of the Week as well as the Top Drawer Soccer National Player of the Week.
Â
In two games, Mawer made 13 saves while registering two shutouts. He began the week with six saves against UCF in a 3-0 victory before notching a career-high seven saves on the road at Georgia Southern. In the 1-0 win against the Eagles, he saved a penalty and also managed a defense that was down a man for the final 81 minutes of the game.
Â
It is the first time in his career that Mawer has taken home conference player of the week honors. It is the third time this season that a Mountaineer has earned Sun Belt weekly honors after senior Pablo Pozos was named Offensive Player of the Week on Sept. 15, and Jacob Redenfors was named Defensive Player of the Week on Sept. 29.
Â
Mawer is the first WVU goalkeeper to earn Top Drawer Soccer Player of the Week and the first Mountaineer since Marcus Caldeira on Oct. 24, 2023.
Â
The Mountaineers will be back in action on Thursday, Oct. 29, for a contest against Coastal Carolina. Kickoff from Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium is set for 7 p.m.
