SURPRISE, Ariz. – The ninth-ranked and No. 2-seed West Virginia University baseball team fell to 13th-ranked and No. 1-seed Kansas, 9-0, in the Big 12 Tournament final, Saturday afternoon at Surprise Stadium. The Mountaineers fall to 39-14 while the Jayhawks complete the Big 12 double and improve to 42-16.
Kansas jumped out to 1-0 lead in the first on a solo home run, but after that, graduate student Ian Korn settled in on the mound, tossing four scoreless innings before the Jayhawks added a run in the sixth.
West Virginia had opportunities when the game was close, leaving nine runners on in the first seven innings, including the bases loaded twice.
In the bottom of the seventh, Kansas put the game away with six runs before adding another run in the eighth.
The Mountaineers finished the game with six hits, all singles, as they were shut out for the third time this season.
Graduate student Sean Smith, redshirt junior Maxx Yehl, and junior Armani Guzman were named to the All-Tournament Team.
West Virginia will learn its fate for NCAA Regionals on Monday, May 25, during the NCAA Baseball Selection Show at noon on ESPN2. The 16 regional hosts will be announced on Sunday night at 8:30 p.m.
