MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The No. 16 West Virginia University baseball team opened NCAA Regionals with a 10-1 victory over Binghamton, Friday evening at Kendrick Family Ballpark. The Mountaineers improve to 40-14 as they reached the 40-win plateau for the second straight season and third time in the last four seasons. The Bearcats fall to 31-21.
Sophomore Chansen Cole struck out 10 in 6.0 innings while allowing just one run on four hits and no walks. Sophomore David Hagen collected his first save of the season with 3.0 scoreless innings while striking out three and not allowing a hit.
At the plate, seniors Matthew Graveline and Ben Lumsden both hit home runs. Lumsden reached base four times while collecting three RBI. Junior Armani Guzman had two hits and drove in three while sophomore Gavin Kelly had two RBI.
After a scoreless first inning, Binghamton took the lead in the second, but in the fourth, WVU scored five runs to take the lead. It started with a two-run home run from Graveline before Lumsden connected on a three-run home run, his first of the season.
In the fifth, the Bearcats loaded the bases, but Cole struck out Sean Sweeney to strand three runners and keep the Mountaineers in front.
The Mountaineers put up their second five-spot of the game in the sixth as Kelly hit a two-run double before Guzman came up with the bases loaded and cleared them with a double of his own.
