Huff's Career-High 38 Leads WVU to Crown Title
April 05, 2026 08:47 PM | Men's Basketball
Honor Huff saved his best game for last. The senior scored a career-high 38 points in leading West Virginia to an 89-82 overtime victory over Oklahoma in the championship game of the College Basketball Crown at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.
The stat line for the Crown's MVP today included 9 of 19 from overall, 8 of 15 from 3-point distance and 12-of-12 from the free throw line in his individual battle with Oklahoma's leading scorer Nigel Pack, who finished with 24.
Huff tallied a team-best 21 points in the opening round victory over Stanford and contributed 13 points in yesterday's win over Creighton.
Huff's eight 3s this evening gave him 120 for the season, now the most-ever by a WVU player surpassing the 117 made by Frank Young in 2007. Ironically, Young's 3-point total came during West Virginia's NIT championship campaign, which was the last time the Mountaineers ended a season victorious.
"I am forever indebted to this group," Huff said afterward. "We have the most camaraderie this year of any place I've ever been."
WVU jumped out to an early 15-point lead, watched Oklahoma turn the tables and take a 13-point advantage on Xzayvier Brown's jumper with 14:16 left, and then rallied from seven points down with 4:16 to go to send the game into overtime. Huff tallied the final five points of regulation, including a pair of free throws with 33 seconds left to put the Mountaineers ahead 76-74.
Tae Davis' layup with 18 seconds left tied the game, setting up an opportunity for Huff to get one final look in regulation. However, the senior's jumper to win it was unsuccessful.
Oklahoma (21-16) scored the first six points of overtime to lead 82-76 with 3:19 left but was held scoreless the rest of the way.
Jasper Floyd halved Oklahoma's lead with a 3 before Huff added another triple after Brenen Lorient blocked Pack's layup attempt.
Oklahoma called a 30-second timeout and when play resumed, Pack missed again from behind the arc, Lorient grabbed the rebound and got the ball to Floyd, who connected on his second 3 to put West Virginia ahead 85-82.
Then it was Obioha who turned away a Davis layup try and once the ball got to Huff, he was fouled by Pack with 55 seconds left. Huff converted both free throws, giving West Virginia a two-possession advantage with 55 seconds left.
OU's next trip down the floor also came up empty when Derrion Reid's missed 3-point attempt was rebounded by Lorient, who once again smartly got the ball into Huff's hands.
Pack fouled Huff once more with 37 seconds left and he made two more at the line - the game's final two points.
"What this team has done, whether being down or having a tough loss, they've always found a way to fight back and they're special," West Virginia coach Ross Hodge said.
Chance Moore came off the bench to contribute 19 points, including 13 in the second half to get West Virginia back into the game. The senior also pulled down a team-high 10 rebounds.
Lorient's final game in a Mountaineer uniform included 15 points and eight boards.
The Sooners, which shot 53% overall and made 8 of 20 from 3-point distance, got 19 points from Davis and 13 from Brown. OU could only manage to make two of its eight field goal attempts in overtime, however.
West Virginia's two big advantages came at the free throw line, where it made 18 of 23 compared to just 10 of 12 for Oklahoma, and off turnovers where it outscored the Sooners 26 to 11.
WVU, which has had four different coaches in a span of four years, concluded its first season under Hodge with a 21-14 overall record.
Nebraska, the Crown's inaugural champion last season, used the momentum from last year's tournament performance to reach the NCAA Tournament "Sweet 16" this season.
The winning players from this year's Crown will share $300,000 in NIL money.
