MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The No. 23 West Virginia University baseball team cruised to a 16-1 victory over Columbia, Sunday afternoon at Kendrick Family Ballpark to take the series. The Mountaineers improve to 10-3 while the Lions fall to 2-7.
For the second straight day, WVU hit a grand slam as sophomore Matt Ineich went deep for the first time this season and finished the game with six RBI. He is just the second Mountaineer to have at least six RBI at Kendrick Family Ballpark, joining Victor Scott II, who had seven against Canisius in 2022.
A day after hitting a walk-off grand slam, graduate student Brodie Kresser reached base four times on two hits and two walks while collecting three RBI and two runs scored. Sophomore Gavin Kelly also reached base four times and scored two runs.
Redshirt junior Maxx Yehl earned the win on the mound, allowing just one run in 6.0 innings while striking out a career-high nine batters. Sophomore Joshua Surigao tossed a scoreless innings as did freshman Weston Smith and redshirt freshman JD Costanzo in their collegiate debuts.
Graduate student Sean Smith got the scoring started in the second inning with an RBI single before junior Tyrus Hall followed with a bases-loaded walk. Ineich then stepped up and hit a grand slam the other way into the Columbia bullpen. He added two more RBI in the third with a bases-loaded single.
The Mountaineers added runs in the fourth and fifth on a sacrifice fly by Armani Guzman and first-and-third double steal attempt. Senior Paul Schoenfeld was thrown out at second, but Kelly was still able to scamper home.
Bases-loaded walks to senior Matthew Graveline and Kresser brought in two more runs in the seventh before another bases-loaded free pass to freshman Weston Mazey forced home a run in the eighth. Freshman Colton Sims added a sacrifice fly and Kresser a two-run single to cap the scoring on the day.
The Mountaineers will remain at home for a midweek matchup against Maryland on Tuesday, March 10. First pitch from Kendrick Family Ballpark is set for 2 p.m.
