Mountaineers Handle Maryland in Midweek Matchup

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University baseball team defeated Maryland, 10-3, Tuesday afternoon at Kendrick Family Ballpark. The Mountaineers improve to 11-3 while the Terrapins fall to 10-6.

West Virginia pitchers combined to throw eight shutout innings before Maryland put up a couple of runs in the ninth. Sophomore David Hagen threw an inning with two strikeouts before leaving due to injury in the second. Senior Carson Estridge tossed 3.0 scoreless while graduate student Ian Korn retired all six batters he faced. Sophomores Mac Stiffler and Bryant Yoak each recorded scoreless outings as well.

At the plate, senior Paul Schoenfeld had three hits, including a triple, and two RBI while sophomore Gavin Kelly reached base three times, drove in two runs and scored two runs. Senior Matthew Graveline also finished the day with two RBI.

Schoenfeld got the scoring started in the first with an RBI single before a productive groundout from Graveline pushed across another run.

In the second, WVU pushed four runs across, getting an RBI single from junior Tyrus Hall before a run came home on a double-steal attempt. Schoenfeld followed with an RBI triple who then scored on a single by Graveline.

In the third, Kelly knocked in two runs with a single. The Mountaineers then added two more runs in the fourth on singles by senior Brock Wills and junior Armani Guzman.

West Virginia has now beaten the Terrapins six consecutive times dating back to 2017.

The Mountaineers begin Big 12 play this weekend when they travel to Baylor. First pitch from Baylor Ballpark in Waco, Texas is set for 7:30 p.m.
