WACO, Texas – A dominant performance on the mound from redshirt junior Maxx Yehl paved the way for an 8-0 victory for the West Virginia University baseball team over Baylor, Sunday afternoon at Baylor Ballpark. The Mountaineers improve to 13-4 overall and 2-1 in the Big 12 while the Bears fall to 11-8 and 1-2 in conference play.
Yehl threw 8.0 scoreless innings and struck out 12 batters while walking just one and allowing three hits, all singles. It was the most strikeouts for a Mountaineer since Griffin Kirn struck out 14 against Utah last season and the most by a WVU pitcher away from Morgantown since Ryan Bergert struck out 14 against St. Joseph's in 2020 in Myrtle Beach. It was also the most by a Mountaineer in a true road game since Alek Manoah struck out 13 against Kansas State in 2019.
At the plate, senior Matthew Graveline hit his team-leading fourth home run of the season and drove in two runs. Junior Armani Guzman had two hits and two RBI while sophomore Gavin Kelly collected two hits to raise his average to .423.
Baylor pitcher Ethan Calder matched zeroes with Yehl for the first five innings and faced the minimum until the sixth when Graveline greeted him with a solo home run to left, landing on the soccer field 404 feet away.
In the seventh, WVU added four runs, starting with a sacrifice fly by graduate student Brodie Kresser. A double by Guzman plated two more runs before a passed ball brought in the fourth run. The Mountaineers tacked on three more runs in the ninth on an error, a bases-loaded walk, and sacrifice fly by senior Paul Schoenfeld.
Freshman David Perez struck out the side in the ninth to close out WVU's third shutout of the season, matching the total from last season. Perez now has 13 strikeouts and zero walks in 7.0 innings of work.
The Mountaineers will be back in action on Tuesday evening when they host Penn State. First pitch from Kendrick Family Ballpark is set for 6:30 p.m.
