March 01, 2026 05:35 PM | Women's Basketball
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The No. 17 West Virginia women's basketball team closed out its regular season campaign in dominating fashion, racing past Cincinnati 118-60, on senior day inside Hope Coliseum on Sunday.
The 118 points are the highest all-time in a Big 12 conference game and are the second-most points scored in program history. The Mountaineers also knocked down the third-most three-pointers in a game with 15 and shot a season-high 58.3% from the floor. WVU only committed four turnovers in the game to match a program game low.
The Mountaineers rode a blistering offensive performance and stifling defense to close the regular season with the most complete 40-minute effort of the season. The win marks the fourth time this season the Mountaineers have broken the 100-point mark, which is also a program record.
Sydney Shaw led the Mountaineers (24–6, 14–4 Big 12) with 24 points, hitting six 3-pointers as WVU shot 15-for-30 from beyond the arc. Gia Cooke and Jordan Harrison each added 20 points, with Harrison also dishing out 10 assists for a double-double.
Kierra Wheeler dominated inside with 21 points and 10 rebounds, helping West Virginia outscore Cincinnati 52–28 in the paint. The effort marks her eighth double of the season. The Mountaineers forced 25 points off turnovers and held the Bearcats (11–19, 6–12) to just 37 percent shooting.
West Virginia exploded for 30 points in the first quarter and never trailed, building a 59–21 halftime lead behind its transition game and pressure defense. The Mountaineers finished with 23 fast-break points.
With the win, the Mountaineers collected their 14th conference win of the season, the third most in a singles season since joining the Big 12 in 2013. The wins are the most since winning 15 during the 2021 season, as WVU's 16 wins in 2014 are the most.
Head Coach Mark Kellogg has never finished lower than fourth in the final regular season standings. With a TCU loss to Baylor later today, the Mountaineers will share the regular-season conference title with the pair. It would mark just the second time the Mountaineers have won a regular-season title in the Big 12.
West Virginia now waits to learn its opponent for the Phillips 66 Big 12 Women's Basketball Tournament. Based on the regular season standings, the Mountaineers will be the two seed in the conference tournament and will receive a double bye to advance to the quarterfinal round.
The Mountaineers will kick off the tournament with their first game on Friday, March 6, at 6:30 p.m. ET. It marks the third time in program history that WVU has been the No. 2 seed, as WVU holds a 4-2 record with the seed.
The tournament is scheduled to run from March 4-9 inside the T-Mobile Center in Kansas City, Missouri.
