
Mountaineers Drop Road Test Against No. 17 TCU

FORT WORTH, Texas – The No. 19 West Virginia University women's basketball team fell on the road to No. 17 TCU, 59-50, inside Ed and Rae Schollmaier Arena on Sunday night.
West Virginia built a steady first-half lead, but TCU erupted after halftime, using a 24-point third quarter to overtake the Mountaineers.
West Virginia (21–6, 11–4 Big 12) controlled most of the opening 20 minutes, limiting the Horned Frogs to 22 points and taking a 28–22 advantage into the break. WVU's defense forced six TCU turnovers in the first half and held the Frogs to 10-of-28 shooting. Gia Cooke supplied timely scoring, leading all players with nine first-half points on her way to a game-high 18.
The third quarter swung the game sharply in the Horned Frogs (23–4, 11–3) direction, opening the period with a pair of 3-pointers and shot 10 of 14 overall, including 4 of 6 from behind the arc. The Frogs outscored WVU 24–11 in the frame, flipping a six-point deficit into a 46–39 lead entering the fourth.
West Virginia struggled to answer the Frogs' run. The Mountaineers shot just 7 of 24 in the second half, including 1 of 7 from 3-point range in the fourth quarter. For the game, WVU finished 18 of 53 from the field and 6 of 24 from deep. The team's leading scorers behind Cooke were Sydney Shaw with 12 points, including three 3-pointers, and Celia Riviere, who added six points and a team-high eight rebounds. Kierra Wheeler chipped in six points, five rebounds and four assists but faced heavy defensive pressure inside.
WVU was outscored 32–22 in the paint and 12–9 in points off turnovers, areas that proved pivotal as TCU's second-half efficiency increased. Rebounding also tilted toward TCU, which held a 32–28 advantage and secured several key defensive boards as the Mountaineers attempted to rally late.
The Horned Frogs defensive pressure in the closing minutes sealed the win, holding WVU to just two field goals in the final four minutes.
The Mountaineers are back at home on Saturday, Feb. 21, when they take on Oklahoma State inside Hope Coliseum in Morgantown. Tipoff is scheduled for 2 p.m. ET and will be broadcast on ESPN+.
