
Mountaineers Victorius In 12th Straight Home Opener

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University women's basketball team opened the regular season with an 83-47 win over Purdue Fort Wayne on Monday evening inside Hope Coliseum in Morgantown.
 
The win moves the Mountaineers to 22-1 in non-conference games during the last three seasons. The win also marks the 18th straight at home, dating back to the end of the 2023-24 season. The home dominance is the second-longest home winning streak in program history, trailing only a run of 31 straight home wins from 2009-2011
 
West Virginia used relentless pressure for 40 minutes that forced Purdue Fort Wayne into 31 turnovers and resulted in 30 of the Mountaineers' points. WVU also recorded 19 steals, with senior guard Sydney Woodley finishing with a game-high six. Senior guard Sydney Shaw finished with four, as senior guard Jordan Harrison and junior forward Riley Makalusky each had three.
 
Four Mountaineers finished the contest in double figures, as 10 Mountaineers scored in the contest. Harrison led all players with 15 points while graduate forward Kierra Wheeler added 14 points and seven rebounds. Sophomore guard Jordan Thomas added 12 points and five rebounds, and Shaw finished with 11 points and seven boards. Junior forward Carter McCray finished with a game-high nine rebounds.
 
Purdue Fort Wayne scored the opening basket of the game, leading to a 9-0 Mountaineer run over the next three minutes of action. WVU pushed its advantage to as many as 14 points in the final minute of the opening quarter before taking a 23-12 lead at the break. Wheeler and Thomas lead the offensive effort in the frame, combining for 14 of the Mountaineers' points in the paint and at the line.
 
The Mastodons chipped away in the second quarter, cutting the WVU lead down to nine points and a 34-25 Mountaineer advantage with two minutes to play. Harrison and Shaw each knocked down deep threes in the final minute to push the WVU lead to 40-25 at the break.
 
Harrison, Wheeler and Thomas carried the offensive load in the opening 20 minutes, each finishing with nine points. The Mountaineers also leaned on their defense, forcing 18 turnovers and recording 11 steals. The pressure led to 16 points in transition.
 
West Virginia settled into the contest in the second half, limiting the Mastodons to just 11 points in each of the final two quarters. The Mountaineers scored 20 points in the third and added 23 in the fourth on their way to a 40-point advantage nearing the final minute of play.
