MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The No. 19 West Virginia University men's soccer team came out on top once again in the Mountain State Derby with a dominant 3-0 win over No. 11 Marshall, Friday evening at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium. The Mountaineers improve to 11-3-2 and 6-2-0 in the Sun Belt while the Thundering Herd fall to 8-2-5 and 5-2-1 in conference play.
West Virginia improves to 18-8-4 all-time against its in-state foes as well as 12-2-2 in games played in Morgantown. The Mountaineers have also held Marshall scoreless for over 300 minutes, posting three consecutive shutouts in the series.
Marcus Caldeira scored a brace for the Mountaineers on Friday, his eighth and ninth goals of the season as well as his 36th and 37th career goals. He also now has five goals against Marshall in his career after recording a hat trick in 2023 against the Thundering Herd.
Morgantown native Dante Huckaby scored his first goal as a Mountaineer in his final regular-season home game. Junior Constantinos Christou and freshman Juan Alvarez both tallied assists in the victory.
Graduate student Marc Bonnaire made two saves to secure his eighth shutout of the season.
Overall, West Virginia outshot Marshall, 17-6, and had eight shots on goal against a defense that had recorded four straight shutouts. WVU also had a slight 8-7 edge in corner kicks.
Caldeira had a chance to give the Mountaineers the lead in the sixth minute, but his header was saved by the Marshall keeper, Eddie DeMarco. He did not miss his opportunity in the 23rd minute, however, as he won the ball in the midfield circle before bursting toward goal and firing a shot from the edge of the box past DeMarco.
The Mountaineers doubled their lead in the 63rd minute as Alvarez sent a corner toward the far corner where Huckaby leaped up and headed it home. In the 72nd minute, Caldeira put the game away, receiving the ball in the box from Christou before scoring from close range.
Caldeira nearly had another hat trick against the Thundering Herd as it was just him and the keeper in the 89th minute, but DeMarco stuck his feet out and made the save.
West Virginia leap frogs Marshall into second place in the Sun Belt standings with 18 points. A win or tie against South Carolina on Tuesday night would secure hosting rights for the first two rounds of the conference tournament. A win and a Kentucky loss would give WVU a share of the Sun Belt regular-season title.
