MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University baseball team hosts the Cal Poly Mustangs in the NCAA Super Regionals from June 5-7 at Kendrick Family Ballpark in Morgantown.
First pitch on Friday and Saturday is scheduled for noon on both days and will air on ESPN2, with Sunday's game time to be determined. It is a best-of-three format, with Sunday's game played only if needed. All games will be available to listen to on the Mountaineer Sports Network and fans can follow along with live stats at NCAA.com.
This is the first-ever meeting between the respective programs. With a spot in the College World Series on the line, both schools will be looking to win two games this weekend despite neither ever having won an NCAA Super Regional game.
This marks West Virginia's (43-15, 21-9 Big 12) third consecutive Super Regionals appearance and the first in program history hosted at WVU's home ballpark. The Mountaineers have their eyes set on their first Super Regional victory after they were swept in two games in each of their last two appearances.
The Mountaineers advanced to Super Regionals after winning the Morgantown Regional. West Virginia had to go through the loser's bracket by winning three straight elimination games, culminating with a 6-5 victory in 10 innings against Kentucky on June 1.
It took a full effort for West Virginia to advance out of the Morgantown Regional, but two players reigned supreme throughout the weekend. Sophomore Gavin Kelly was named the Tournament MVP after hitting .400 with three home runs.
Junior Armani Guzman had the late heroics, hitting the walk-off single in the bottom of the 10th inning to defeat Kentucky. He hit .455 with four doubles.
On the mound, junior Dawson Montesa was stellar on the mound when he tossed 7.1 innings with seven strikeouts and five runs allowed against Wake Forest on May 31. He followed that by getting two outs in the 10th against Kentucky in the regional final and earned his second win in as many days.
Redshirt junior Maxx Yehl also overcame a lackluster performance in game two of the regional to pitch five innings in game seven against Kentucky. He allowed only one run and struck out six batters.
The Cal Poly Mustangs (39-22, 22-8 Big West) enter the state of West Virginia winners of 12 of their last 13 games and are making their first appearance in the NCAA Super Regionals in program history.
Cal Poly advanced out of the Los Angeles Regional with wins over Virginia Tech and Saint Mary's (twice). The Mustangs did not face the No. 1 overall seed in UCLA during the regional, as the Bruins were eliminated by Saint Mary's.
Under head coach Larry Lee, the Mustangs have won back-to-back Big West Conference Tournament championships to earn the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
The Mustangs completed the full sweep this year, also winning the Big West regular season title for the second time in school history and first since 2014.
Junior Ryan Tayman was named the most outstanding player for the Los Angeles Regional, batting .500 with two home runs. He earned Big West Co-Field Player of the Year honors this season.
