MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The No. 10 West Virginia University men's soccer team swept the Sun Belt weekly awards as senior
Marcus Caldeira was named the Offensive Player of the Week while junior
Thijs Veldhorst collected Defensive Player of the Week.
Caldeira scored two goals in WVU's victory over La Salle on Aug. 25. He has three on the season and 31 for his career, tied for seventh in program history. The Mississauga, Ontario native also has 13 game-winning goals in his career, the most ever by a Mountaineer.
Veldhorst found the back of the net for the first time in his WVU career against La Salle while also contributing to two shutouts against the Explorers and on the road at No. 16 Akron. He played 157 minutes, including the full 90 against the Zips.
It is the seventh time that a WVU player has taken home Sun Belt Offensive Player of the Week and the second week in a row after junior
Pablo Pozos earned the honor to open the season. It is the second time that a Mountaineer has won Sun Belt Defensive Player of the Week and the first since
Carlos Hernando on Sept. 12, 2023.
West Virginia will be back on the pitch on Wednesday, Sept. 3, to take on No. 20 Gardner-Webb. Kickoff from Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium is set for 7 p.m.
