The game marks the start of the third season of coach Kellogg's tenure at West Virginia. In 20 seasons as a head coach, Kellogg owns a career record of 495-136 (.784), which makes him the fourth-winningest active Division I coach in the country by win percentage with 10+ seasons. During that span, he has also totaled 20 winning seasons and 16 20-win seasons, including three 30-win campaigns.
West Virginia and Purdue Fort Wayne meet for the first time. West Virginia is 36-16 all-time in season openers and has won the last 11 openers, dating back to the 2014-15 season. During that stretch, WVU is averaging 81.5 points in season openers and has limited the opposition to 42.1 points in those contests. The Mountaineers are averaging 70.1 points per game all-time in season openers.
What's more, West Virginia is 23-3 in season openers since the 1999-00 season.
The Mountaineers return five players from last year's squad and bring 340 games of combined experience while making 209 starts. Jordan Harrison, Sydney Shaw and Jordan Thomas each combined for 67 starts last year. The list of returners is highlighted by Nancy Leiberman Point Guard of the Year Preseason Watchlist selection in Harrison.
Harrison has played in and started every game of her career. She has scored 1,309 points, 490 assists, 369 rebounds and 236 steals across three seasons. Harrison earned all-conference honors in each of the last two seasons and was named to this season's preseason all-conference team.
Additionally, six newcomers join the team to make up WVU's 11-woman squad. High-impact transfers like Gia Cooke (Houston), Kierra Wheeler (Norfolk State), Riley Makalusky (Butler), Loghan Johnson (Texas Tech) and Carter McCray (Wisconsin) help build out the roster. The Mountaineers round out their lineup with freshman Madison Parrish. The transfer class is touted as one of the best in the country, bolstering a combined 345 games played and 227 starts.
Purdue Fort Wayne finished last season with a runner-up finish in the 2024-25 Horizon League regular season and runner-up in the Horizon League Championship. The Mastodons earned a trip to the WNIT Great 8, the furthest postseason run in program history. The Mastodons won a program-record 27 games and a record 18 Horizon League games.
