Michael Derringer arrived at West Virginia in November 2022 and serves as the associate athletics director for governance and compliance.
Derringer brings more than a decade of experience to the department. Prior to his time at WVU, he spent 11 years at UAB, where he was an athletics compliance coordinator (2012-13), director of athletics compliance (2013-19) and associate athletics director for compliance (2019-22). In those roles, he became the primary compliance contact for eligibility, financial aid and recruiting, spearheaded the school’s Name, Image and Likeness policies and procedures and oversaw of all aspects of the athletics compliance office.
Derringer, a member of the National Association for Athletics Compliance (NAAC), began his career as a compliance assistant at Eastern Kentucky from 2010-12.
A native of Richmond, Kentucky, Derringer earned a bachelor’s degree in exercise science at Transylvania University in 2010. He also earned his master’s in physical education at Eastern Kentucky in 2011.
Derringer and his wife, Lisa, have one daughter, Lizzy.
