Joe Mitchin joined the WVU Department of Intercollegiate Athletics in the summer of 2019, and currently serves as the Director of Social Strategy.
In his role, Mitchin manages West Virginia University’s social media accounts and assists in content creation and development, among other duties.
Prior to that, he served as an Assistant Director of Athletics Communications from 2019-22, where he was primary media contact for the WVU men’s soccer and baseball teams. Additionally, he assisted in other areas of the communications office, including the promotion and development of the Mountaineer football program.
Mitchin also served as a graduate assistant with WVU Athletics Communications from 2017-19, working as the primary media contact for men’s and women’s swimming and diving, cross country and track and field teams. He also supported communication efforts for the football team, as well as several other Mountaineer programs.
Mitchin began his career as a sportswriter at The Independent (Massillon, Ohio) and Times West Virginian (Fairmont, West Virginia) newspapers for nearly three years. He was named the Best Sports Feature Writer by the Ohio Associated Press Media Editors in 2016.
A native of Canton, Ohio, Mitchin earned a bachelor’s degree from West Virginia University in 2014, and a master’s in sport management from WVU in 2019.
Mitchin and his wife, Amy, reside in Morgantown.
