Jake Gurtis joined the Mountaineer strength and conditioning staff in July 2025 and oversees the strength and conditioning efforts for the women’s soccer, cross country and track and field programs.
Gurtis started working with WVU’s strength and conditioning staff in July 2023 as a graduate assistant, overseeing the volleyball and gymnastics programs. He also assisted with the training efforts for the men’s and women’s soccer and women’s basketball teams. During his graduate assistantship, he also helped with the oversight of the department’s strength and conditioning interns.
Following his graduation from WVU, he worked at UNC Charlotte as an assistant sports performance coach. While at UNCC, he directed, designed and executed strength, conditioning and recovery programs for the men’s and women’s soccer teams.
His work experience also includes strength and conditioning internships at Virginia Tech and Rutgers.
He holds certifications from the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA) and is a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS).
Gurtis earned his bachelor’s degree in exercise and sport science from Temple in 2022, before completing his master’s degree in sport management and sport coaching from WVU in 2024.
The Kingston, Pennsylvania, native resides in Morgantown.
