MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia University volleyball coach Jen Greeny has announced the hiring of Austin Buchanan as an assistant coach.
A native of Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, Buchanan arrives in Morgantown after serving as an assistant volleyball coach at Yale University during the 2025 fall season. They finished 15-10 and 10-4 in the Ivy League, good for second place. While there, he supported daily training, provided on-court technical instruction and contributed to scouting and match preparation. He also coached within the Northeast Volleyball Club system, leading academy camps, clinics, and private training sessions.
"We are excited to welcome Austin to our staff!" Greeny said. "Having seen firsthand the energy and dedication he brings to every practice and player interaction, I am confident that our team will benefit from his expertise and genuine care. We look forward to the positive impact Austin will have on our program!"
"I am so excited to be in Morgantown and can't wait to get to work helping build on the momentum of this program," Buchanan said.
Before his time at Yale, Buchanan competed as a setter and middle blocker at Sacred Heart University, where he was a two-time team captain. He began his collegiate playing career at the University of Hawai'i, helping the Rainbow Warriors capture back-to-back NCAA Division I National Championships in 2021 and 2022 as well as two Big West titles.
His coaching experience also includes roles with Joel Barlow High School, where he helped guide the program to the 2025 Connecticut State Championship and summer coaching positions at Washington State University. Buchanan previously served as a volunteer assistant at the University of Idaho, contributing to practice planning, statistical analysis, and opponent scouting.
Buchanan earned his Bachelor of Business Administration in Management from the University of Hawai'i at Manoa and is currently completing his Master of Business Administration and Leadership Graduate Certificate at Sacred Heart University.
