
Mountaineers Sweep Coppin State to Win West Virginia Invitational

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia volleyball team (6-0) capped off a dominant weekend by sweeping Coppin State in straight sets (25-15, 25-14, 25-14) to win the 2025 West Virginia Invitational. The victory marked the Mountaineers' first sweep of the season.
Tournament MVP Cassidy Tanton fueled the WVU offense with 14 kills on an efficient .591 hitting percentage, finishing with a match-high 15.5 points. Joining her on the all-tournament team were teammates Maddy McGath and Nina Horning, who both delivered standout performances in the finale.
McGath was a force at the net, recording eight kills on .800 hitting along with a game-leading seven blocks, totaling 12.5 points. Horning added seven kills, seven digs, and 10 points to round out her all-around effort.
Setter Alexis Finnvold directed the offense with a match-high 23 assists, while libero LonDynn Betts anchored the back row with 17 digs, six assists, and a service ace.
As a team, the Mountaineers recorded 43 kills on .359 hitting, along with 46 digs, 41 assists, and 10 total blocks. WVU's defense held Coppin State to just 23 kills on a .020 hitting percentage.

West Virginia travels next to Queens, N.Y., for the Jack Kaiser Volleyball Classic, hosted by St. John's. The Mountaineers face St. John's on Friday, Sept. 12 at 7 p.m., Marist on Saturday, Sept. 13 at 7 p.m., and Delaware State on Sunday, Sept. 14 at 4 p.m.
