
Three Mountaineers Win Titles at Southeast Open

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University wrestling team began the 2025-26 season at the Southeast Open at the Cregger Center in Salem, Virginia, on Sunday.
West Virginia had three champions as two Mountaineers won titles in their first collegiate appearances.
Freshman Gunner Andrick won five matches to earn the title at 133 pounds in the freshman/sophomore division. On his way to the championship, Andrick defeated classmate Casen Roark by decision, 4-1, in the semifinals.
In the finals, Andrick defeated Jude Robson by decision, 5-3.
Redshirt junior Brody Conley returned in his first action since a late injury last season to win the title at 174 pounds. Conley opened the day with a win by major decision over Appalachian State's Alex Hooper, 12-3.
In the following round, Conley defeated Gardner-Webb's Andrew Wilson by fall before facing three consecutive wrestlers from Minnesota. He advanced to the semifinals with a win by decision against Minnesota's Jed Wester in the quarterfinals.
In the semifinals, Conley won in overtime over Minnesota's No. 21 Clayton Whiting, 8-1, before winning the title by decision over Minnesota's Ethan Riddle, 8-2.
In the 165-pound freshman/sophomore division, freshman Leo Contino dominated as he won five matches to claim the championship. Contino won his first two matches by fall as he advanced to the quarterfinals to face Davidson's Anwar Alli.
Against Alli, Contino used a three-point nearfall to propel himself to a 5-0 win by decision. With a trip to the finals on the line, Contino beat North Carolina's Luke Sipes by decision, 2-1.
He kept things rolling in the finals as he took on Virginia Tech's Benjamin Weader. A takedown in overtime sealed the victory as Contino won by decision, 4-1.
