MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia University Athletics has announced an updated structure for its cheerleading program, beginning with the 2026-27 season.
Moving forward, WVU will transition to one unified WVU Cheerleading team, replacing the previous Gold and Blue team model. The new structure will feature a single co-ed squad that supports all major athletic programs, including football, men's basketball and women's basketball, while also representing the University at select campus and community appearances.
"This new model allows us to create a more unified, visible and impactful presence across all of our athletic programs and throughout the community," Erin Gibson, Senior Associate Athletics Director for Marketing, said. "It also provides more opportunities for student-athletes to be involved in all aspects of WVU game days."
Head Cheer Coach Christy Bryan-Davis expressed excitement about the transition and the opportunities it creates for current and future student-athletes.
"The change in our cheer program will create a more cohesive and unified group," Bryan-Davis said. "As we transition from two teams into one, we will build an environment that promotes stronger collaboration, greater consistency and continued skill development. By bringing our athletes together, we can elevate the quality of our performances across all games and events. We're looking for driven athletes who want to be part of something bigger, and we're excited to welcome both experienced cheerleaders and those ready to learn and perform in a co-ed environment."
Under the previous structure, the Gold team supported football and men's basketball, while the Blue team supported women's basketball. The updated format brings all members together into one team experience, enhancing consistency, training and overall program development.
WVU Cheerleading is a co-ed program and encourages both male and female participants to try out. Prior experience with co-ed stunting is not required. Beginner-level stunting skills will be taught during tryout clinics to help prepare participants for the selection process.
Tryouts for the 2026-27 WVU Co-Ed Cheerleading Team will be held May 2-3, 2026. All details, requirements and registration forms are available at WVUSports.com/Cheer.
