
West Virginia’s Individuals Complete NCAA Regional Competition

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Junior Amber Lowe and sophomores Sophia Rice and Emerson Smith of the West Virginia University gymnastics team completed competition as individual event specialists in the Second Round of the NCAA Regional Championships inside the Maravich Center in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, on Thursday night.
Lowe represented the Mountaineers on balance beam, Rice competed on vault and Smith qualified to compete on floor exercise. West Virginia's competitors rotated with Nebraska during the meet.
In the opening rotation on floor, Smith shined in her routine, scoring a season-high matching 9.9. The Westerville, Ohio, native's total was good for a tie for fifth overall among gymnasts in the second session.
A Morgantown, West Virginia, native, Rice's opportunity to compete came in the second rotation, where she scored a 9.775 for her Tsuk Full vault.
After a bye in the third, Lowe was the final Mountaineer to compete in the fourth rotation, unfortunately suffering a fall during her routine. The Acworth, Georgia, native tallied an 8.8 for her performance.
West Virginia's 2026 campaign officially concluded on Thursday evening. The Mountaineers finished 9-14 overall with a 1-5 mark in Big 12 Conference competition. Throughout the season, WVU tallied six scores of 195.0 or higher, including a season high of 196.35 at Towson on March 1. West Virginia's vault and floor lineups finished the year ranked inside the top 40 in the Road to Nationals rankings, including No. 32 on vault and No. 39 on floor. Freshman Kayla Smith completed an incredible freshman campaign in 2026, competing on all-around in all 13 meets. She became just the third freshman in program history and first since 2008 to eclipse 500 points in her inaugural season as a Mountaineer.
