
WVU Posts Strong Showing at No. 12 Utah

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – The West Virginia University gymnastics team scored a 195.3 to finish in third place in a tri meet against No. 12 Utah and No. 24 BYU inside the Jon M. Huntsman Center in Salt Lake City, Utah, on Saturday afternoon.
The host Utes took first place with a 197.65, while BYU was second with a 196.55. West Virginia registered scores of 48.95 on vault, 48.7 on uneven bars, 48.775 on balance beam and 48.875 on floor exercise. Of note, WVU's team score marked its highest ever inside the Huntsman Center.
Opening on bars, junior Jurnee Lane led the way with a 9.775, while sophomore Kaelyn Skeel was just behind her with a 9.75. A trio of 9.725's from juniors Amber Lowe and Jayden McDonnell and freshman Haley Mendoza capped the opening rotation for the Mountaineers.
Moving to beam, a 9.875 from Lowe highlighted the rotation, which was just shy of her career best. Mendoza also was just off her career best with a 9.8. Senior Miranda Smith and freshmen Auden Pederson and Kayla Smith tallied matching 9.7's to round out the rotation.
On floor, the Mountaineer lineup looked better than the scores showed, but a 9.8 for Lane and sophomore Emerson Smith led the way. Kayla Smith recorded a 9.775, while senior Carlee Nelson and sophomore Taylor Tuohy scored a pair of 9.75's.
A season-best 9.875 for sophomore Sophia Rice highlighted the final rotation on vault. Kayla Smith scored a 9.825, followed by a 9.8 for Nelson. Emerson Smith and sophomore Karleigh DiCello tallied 9.725's to finish the meet for the Mountaineers.
On all-around, Kayla Smith scored a 38.975 to finish in fourth place in the event standings. Elsewhere, Lowe earned an impressive tie for first place on beam.
Up next, West Virginia wraps up the regular season with its second double meet weekend of the year. The weekend begins at No. 21 NC State on Friday, March 13. Competition inside the James T. Valvano Arena at William-Neal Reynolds Coliseum in Raleigh, North Carolina, is tabbed for 6 p.m. ET.
